Last month, June, 2002, I was diagnosed with type II diabetes.  BG levels ranged between 250 and 300.  This was quite a shock as there was no previous history of diabetes within my family.

My Doctor placed me on the traditional high carbohydrate, low fat diet, with carbohydrates averaging 250 grams each day.  I was also placed on a regiment of 50 units of NPH each morning, 30 units of NPH each evening, and 20 units of fast acting Novolog before each meal.  I was told to eat three full meals each day.  As a single, active individual my eating habits usually consisted of eating smaller snacks and meals throughout the day.  Eating three large meals at set times each day was a major change to my lifestyle.

My daily eating routine now consisted of stuffing myself with high carbohydrate meals three times each day, and then taking large amounts of insulin to lower my BG level.  BG levels had gone crazy, ranging from 60 to 180 during the course of a day.

I was not willing to accept this way of life, and I began searching the internet for information and answers.  I was lucky and found information dealing with your book “Diabetes Solution”.  Your book was ordered the same evening, and when received it was read from cover to cover.  The book is written in a way that is very easy to understand, and the logic behind the information you provide is flawless.

I realized that most of my life had been spent following the principles in your book.  My exercise program had consisted of working out with weights, and most of the foods I ate were high in protein and low in carbohydrates.  It was only during the past five or six years that I have fallen into the “Junk Food” trap; eating large quantities of foods high in carbohydrates, and then washing it down with regular soft drinks full of sugar.  I would hate to imagine the total number of carbohydrates I was consuming each day.

I began following the low carbohydrate diet outlined in your book, and positive results were noticed immediately.  During the first week “before meal” insulin was reduced from 20 units to 5 units, morning insulin was reduced from 50 units to 15 units, and evening insulin was reduced from 30 units to 15 units.  My BG readings averaged below 100.

I was thrilled.  During the first week on your program my daily insulin intake had been reduce from 140 total units to 45 units, and BG readings were better than they had even been, averaging under 100 throughout the day.

By the end of the second week I was no longer taking “before meal” insulin, and background insulin had been reduced to 10 units each day.  BG readings were taken four times each day, and still averaged less than 100, with no high or low spikes.

I have just ended my third week of following  the principles that you outline in “Diabetes Solution”,  and I have a huge smile on my face.  For the past three days I have not taken any insulin or medication to help control my BG level, and readings continue to 100 or less.  I have also returned to an exercise program of lifting weights, and during the past three week period I have lost 12 pounds of body fat, while muscle mass/tone has increased.

My Doctor is absolutely amazed at the progress I have made, and has asked many questions about the exercise program and diet I have been following.  This is definite proof that many type II diabetes can throw away their oral medication and bottles of insulin if they follow the advice in your book.

I can never thank you enough for giving me a new life and the ability to control my diabetes without needles or medication.
